Saint Gregory, Wonderworker of Neocaesarea

Saint Gregory the Wonderworker, Bishop of Neocaesarea, was born in the city of Neocaesarea (northern Asia Minor) into a prominent pagan family (between 210 - 215), and his original name was Theodore.

After his elementary education, Saint Gregory and his brother Gregory, or Athenodoros (Athēnódoros)1 (according to some hagiological sources) they went to Beirut to study law. The great thinkers of antiquity were not able to quench his thirst for knowledge, however. Truth was revealed to him only in the Holy Gospel, and the young man became a Christian.

In order to continue his studies, Saint Gregory went to Alexandria, known at that time as a center for pagan and Christian learning. Eager to acquire knowledge, Gregory went to the Alexandrian Catechetical School, where the presbyter Origen taught. Origen was a famous teacher, possessing a great strength of mind and profound knowledge. Saint Gregory became a pupil of Origen. Afterward, the Saint wrote of his mentor: “This man received from God a sublime gift, to be an interpreter of the Word of God for people, to apprehend the Word of God, as God Himself did use it, and to explain it to people, insofar as they could understand it.” Saint Gregory studied for eight years with Origen, who baptized him.

Saint Gregory's ascetical life, his continence, purity, and lack of covetousness aroused the envy of his conceited and sin-loving peers, pagans that they were, and they decided to slander Saint Gregory. Once, when he was conversing with philosophers and teachers in the city square, a notorious harlot came up to him and demanded payment for a sin he had supposedly committed with her. At first Saint Gregory gently remonstrated with her, saying that perhaps she had mistaken him for someone else. But the profligate woman would not be silenced. Then he asked a friend to give her the money. Just as the woman took the unjustified payment, she fell to the ground in a demonic fit, and the fraud was revealed. Saint Gregory prayed over her, and the demon was expelled. This was the first of his miracles.

After returning to Neocaesarea, the Saint fled from worldly affairs, into which influential townsmen persistently sought to push him. He went into the desert, where by fasting and prayer he attained great spiritual heights, as well as the gifts of clairvoyance and prophecy. Saint Gregory loved his life in the wilderness and wanted to remain in solitude until the end of his days, but the Lord willed otherwise.

Learning of Saint Gregory’s ascetical life, Bishop Phaidemos (Phaίdēmos) of the Cappadocian city of Amaseia, decided to make him Bishop of Neocaesarea. But foreseeing in spirit the intention of Bishop Phaίdēmos, the Saint hid himself from the hierarch's messengers who were sent to find him. Then Bishop Phaidemos consecrated Saint in absentia as Bishop of Neocaesarea, entreating the Lord to bless the unusual ordination. Saint Gregory regarded the extraordinary event as a manifestation of God's will, and he did not dare to protest. This episode in the life of Saint Gregory was recorded by Saint Gregory of Nyssa (January 10). He relates that Saint Gregory of Neocaesarea received the episcopal rank only after Bishop Phaidemos had ordained him to all the canonical ranks.

During this time, the heresy of Sabellius and Paul of Samosata began to spread. They taught falsely concerning the Holy Trinity. Saint Gregory prayed fervently and diligently imploring God and His most pure Mother to reveal the truth to him. The Most Holy Theotokos appeared to him, as radiant as the sun, and with her was the Apostle John the Theologian dressed in hierarchal vestments.

By the command of the Mother of God, the Apostle John taught the Saint the correct way to speak of the Mystery of the Most Holy Trinity. Saint Gregory wrote down all that Saint John revealed to him. The Symbol of the Faith, as written down by Saint Gregory, is a great divine revelation in the history of the Church. The teaching concerning the Holy Trinity in Orthodox Theology is based on it. Subsequently, it was accepted by the Holy Fathers of the Church: Basil the Great, Gregory the Theologian, and Gregory of Nyssa. Saint Gregory's Symbol (Creed) was later examined and affirmed in the year 325 by the First Ecumenical Council, showing its enduring significance for Orthodoxy. Even those who disagreed with Saint Gregory regarded him as a second Moses.2

After becoming a hierarch, Saint Gregory journeyed to Neocaesarea. Along his way from Amaseia, he cast out the demons from a pagan temple, the priest of which he converted to Christ. That convert was a witness to yet another of the Saint's miracles: at his word a large stone moved from its place.

The Saint's sermons were direct, lively and fruitful. He taught and worked miracles in the name of Christ: he healed the sick, helped the needy, and settled disputes and complaints. Two brothers who shared an inheritance were unable to agree about their dead father's property. A large lake was the cause of their dispute, for each brother wanted the lake for himself. Both of them gathered their friends together, and were ready to come to blows. Saint Gregory persuaded them to delay their fight until the following day, while he prayed all night long on the shore of the lake which had sparked the quarrel. When dawn came, everyone saw that the lake had dried up or gone underground. Now, by the Saint's intense prayer, there was only a stream, and its course defined the boundary line. Another time, during the construction of a church, he commanded a hill to move and make room for the foundation to be dug.

When the persecution of Christians began under Emperor Decius (249-251), Saint Gregory led his flock to a faraway mountain. A certain pagan, who knew where the Christians were hiding, informed the persecutors, and soldiers surrounded the mountain. The Saint went out into an open place, raised his hands to heaven, and ordered his deacon to do the same. The soldiers searched the entire mountain, and several times they went right past those who were praying. Unable to see them, they gave up and went away. In the city they reported that there was nowhere to hide on the mountain. There were no people, just two trees standing next to each other. The informer was struck with amazement, he repented of his ways and became a devout Christian.

Saint Gregory returned to Neocaesarea after the end of the persecution. With his blessing, Church Feasts were established in honor of the martyrs who had suffered for Christ.

By the holiness of his life, his effective preaching, his miracles, and inspired guidance of his flock, the Saint increased the number of converts to Christ. When Saint Gregory first came to his See, there were only seventeen Christians in Neocaesarea. At the time of his repose, only seventeen pagans were left in the city.

Trust God as You Step out Of Your Comfort Zone.

“Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him” (JAMES 1:12).

When we confront trials and tragic events in our life, we must not panic but trust God that He will change these terrible trials for our good and for His glory. We know that Living in this dark and fallen world makes us suffer all the time. But St. James is reminding us and sharing with us this glorious promise, that we are blessed when we persevere under trial because having stood the trials and the persecutions of the devil, not losing our faith and hope, will lead us to receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love Him. God will use all things to conform us to the image of Christ and often in our life that includes pain and suffering. In times of suffering, we must pray for God’s mercy to come and cry out for His help in the Holy Spirit. We must remember Jesus’ words to us in the gospel, that in this life, there will be trouble, yet, we know that He overcame the world for us and He gave us His victory in order for us to overcome also. And that is why abiding in Jesus is so important because it is the rock on which we stand when trials and the storms of life come. Now we know that He never leaves our side and walks with us through the darkest valley, and we also have the hope that of eternal life that awaits us in Jesus Christ. We have to trust our life in His sovereign hands no matter what comes our way.

WORD OF WISDOM

St. John Chrysostom Rebukes the Christians Who Still Observe the Old Testament Law and The Sabbath

Listen to Paul’s words, that the observance of the Law overthrows the Gospel, and learn, if you continue to do this, how this comes to pass, and tremble, and shun this pitfall. How you still keep the sabbath, and fast with the Jews? Is it that you still fear the Law and abandonment of its letter? By doing this, you see faith as weak, and by itself powerless to save. A fear to omit the sabbath plainly shows that you fear the Law as still in force; and if the Law is needful, it is so as a whole, not in part, nor in one commandment only; and if as a whole, the righteousness which is by faith is little by little shut out. If you keep the sabbath, why not also be circumcised? and if circumcised, why not also offer sacrifices? If the Law is to be observed, it must be observed as a whole, or not at all.” (Homilies on Galatians 2:17 [A.D. 395]).

ASK BISHOP MAXIMUS

How can I bear witness to Christ?

Firstly, you must be sure that you have opened your heart with your free will to Christ to enter your life, which is evident in your love to obey His commandments.

Secondly, your life, daily behavior, and the new nature should be in accordance with the commandments of the Gospel of Christ so that He becomes alive in you and your life bears witness to Him and the work of the Holy Spirit and His fruit in you.

Thirdly, begin with the intercessory prayer for those you will preach the Gospel of Christ.

Fourthly, to testify to others about the change that Christ has brought about in your life. It would be best if you used verses from the Gospel and Christ’s words and teachings in your testimony.

SPIRITUAL LIFE

GOD’S CREATION OF MAN

Remarkably, the Book of Genesis tells us about the creation of nature and all beings that they were issued by the word of command from God (Let it be)  "Then God said, “Let there be light……., Let the earth bring forth grass…..“ (Genesis 1:24-26). But when He talked about man's creation it wasn't the case, but He said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. Then God blessed them, and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it; have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over every living thing that moves on the earth.” (Genesis 1:26-28). So man’s creation was not like the rest of all beings in any way, but it was the seal of the image of the free, wise, creative, righteous, and holy God, In man. For God, man is the most dignified of all creatures. He did not only create humans like other irrational beings on earth, but He created them in His image and gave them fellowship in the power of the Word, i.e., His Son Jesus Christ. God created humankind in His image and gave them some of the shadows of His Son Jesus Christ, and they became rational and communed with Him to become happy and have a real life.

Thus, we can realize the mystery of reason and wisdom and how they became man in his creation. The secret is that man is distinguished from other creatures by having a human spirit. The human spirit is the center of wisdom and will in man that animals do not have. Animals have a soul, the center of feelings, instincts, and reactions, but they cannot think, create, make decisions, and change. This is all the power emanating from the human spirit, which is a mirror to the Spirit of God. Moreover, the Book of Genesis, chapter two, verse seven, tells us that God breathed into the nostrils of man the breath of life “And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being.” According to the teachings of the Early Fathers of the Church, this breath of life is the Holy Spirit, who was united by the spirit of man. Thus, the spirit of man became highly powerful and had authority, being first a rational spirit. Secondly, united by the Holy Spirit, who nourishes and develops man to gradually ascend towards Who is perfect, that is, to the only begotten uncreated Son. That is, the Holy Spirit was inhabiting the first man in the way that later became the man of the New Testament.

Thus, we can understand why modern man has been so easily convinced of the theory of evolution. If he lacked the wisdom of the Holy Spirit and his mind became immersed in worldly lusts, he did not find much difference between him and the animals, so he believed that his origin was a monkey. And if the light of the human soul is extinguished and man becomes unable to see God and unite in His life and communicate with Him, then the closest reality to him is that there is no God. As it is written in Psalms fourteen, verse one, “The fool has said in his heart, There is no God. They are corrupt. They have done abominable works. There is none who does good.” Man has become unable to see God, feel Him, or interact with Him in any way, and this is ultimately the definition of the fall of man.

Thanks to God for giving us in Christ the possibility of recovering human nature to its divine image, in which we can love others and feel peace of mind, the comfort of the soul, and the joy of the spirit. And thus be able to triumph over the evil temptations of sin and its deadly and destructive effects.

Man has actually become unable to see God, nor feel Him, nor interact with Him in any way, and this is ultimately the definition of the state of man's fall.

And this is Christ’s gift to man in the New Testament through the Holy Spirit, which is the possibility of recovering the human nature to its divine image, in which he can love others, feel the peace of mind, the comfort of the soul and the joy of the spirit.

And thus be able to triumph over the evil temptations of sin and its deadly and destructive effects.

TALKING TO JESUS

Prayer for Strength when Feel Weakness

image

Dear Lord

You are my rock, and I run to you today, believing that you will lift up my heavy arms, that you will fuel me for the tasks you've given me, and that your joy will completely consume the weakness of my life and make me strong again. I don't want to stay grounded, crippled by limitations and failed attempts. I'm tired of feeble efforts. Lord, I want to mount up with wings like an eagle and not just fly. I want to soar.

Renew my strength, Lord. Fill me with your supernatural power to overcome each obstacle in my path. With my eyes on you, Lord, with you walking beside me, working through me, I can make it. Thank you, Lord!

In Jesus's name, Amen

EPHESIANS 1:3-6

“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ, just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before Him in love, having predestined us to adoption as sons by Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the good pleasure of His will, to the praise of the glory of His grace, by which He made us accepted in the Beloved.
